Abstract

Background : The aim of this review was to assess the effectiveness of exercise in postmenopausal women with hypertension

Methods : We searched the literature using 8 electronic databases for their inception to 12 Dec 2013 and included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared any type of exercise. Before-and-after studies and prevention programs were excluded.

Results : We used the Cochrane Collaboration¡¯s risk of bias instrument and performed a meta-analysis on 3 studies including 228 participants, using data on SBP, DBP and body fat. For all domains, an unclear risk of bias was the most common rating. The effects of the interventions were reductions in SBP of 8.39 (95% CI: -17.83 to 1.05), DBP of 1.94 (95% CI:-7.20 to 3.32), and body fat of 1.50 (95% CI:-1.63 to -1.36) in the exercise group compared with the control group.

Conclusions : This limited evidence suggests that exercise may be an effective treatment for hypertension in postmenopausal women. The designs used in the exercise interventions may be referenced for future studies.
